Retail Lighting
Retail lighting encompasses many functions, not only highlighting
the goods on display, but also providing light for payment, security
and customer movement. Lighting also plays a key part in creating
the ambience of a shops interior.
In all but a few special cases general lighting should be by compact
fluorescent (energy efficient) with the display lighting element
being by low voltage halogens (clean & bright). Both can provide
cost effective light as well as giving good colour rendition. Fully
adjustable low voltage fittings (flush fitting, pan & tilt)
should be used to allow display units to be rearranged and repositioned
to suit the stores needs without extensive relighting.
A retail lighting scheme needs to be well maintained as a gloomy
and ill lit shop will not attract potential customers! Regular maintenance
will help keep its output at the designed required level.
As the majority of the lighting would have been installed during
the initial fit-out, the lamps and fittings will have aged as a
whole, so if one lamp or its running gear has failed the others
will not be far behind (see Technical).
They would all have suffered a similar amount of dirt build up.
It would be prudent to have the lighting maintained as a whole
rather than taking the piecemeal "replace on failure"
approach. This would ensure minimal disruption to the Sales area,
be cost efficient and keep the entire scheme in good working order.
"Back of House" areas could also benefit from careful
consideration, as stock and rest area lighting is usually left on
all day. It, like the shops general lighting, would benefit from
being energy efficient. By using compact fluorescents rather than
"light bulbs", electricity bills can be kept at a minimum
for these non-sales areas.
All lamp changes will be carried out using Osram,
Phillips or a similar quality
lamp.
